Golf + Manual Therapy
Titleist Performance Institute’s Level 1 Certification
Travis recently completed the golf certification and we wanted to find out a bit more about how the skills may be applied.
How might golfers benefit from working with a physical therapist proactively?
“A physical therapist can help to identify of limitations throughout the body which might cause compensations. Compensations multiplied over time can create dysfunction and pain. If problem areas can be identified by a golf instructor, golf fitness specialist, or physical therapist, a team approach can be utilized to help golfers avoid injury.”
What was your biggest takeaway from the certification?
“I decided to take the Titleist Performance Institute Certification course because of all of the golfers that I have on my schedule. I kept saying, ‘I don’t play golf, but I know human movement, therefore I don’t need any additional golf specific certifications.’ As I spoke with golfers about different components of their swing, I realized maybe I didn’t know golf specific movements as well as I had thought. Taking the course helped give me a system for marrying the TPI assessment of the golf swing with the Functional Manual Therapy® approach to best help my golf clientele.”
Are there pieces of the training that can be applied to other sports?
“Absolutely, the TPI certification course did an excellent job of breaking down the golf swing into its component parts. A similar concept may be applied to overhead athletes or tennis players. Is there a mobility issue, a strength issue, or a motor control issue? Whether it is pitching, tennis, or any other sport, we need the answers to these questions in order to build a specific program out.”
