What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

You might have noticed that Congruency shares the office with Barbara Green Physical Therapy.

Barbara tells us more in her own words.

Q: Tell us a little about what you.

Barbara: “I have been a Physical Therapist for 40 years and we did not learn any of this in PT school. Treatments in this area started about 25 years ago when a few PTs began private continuing education classes.”

Q: What exactly is pelvic floor therapy?

Barbara: “Pelvic floor physical therapy is a unique area of PT. We are working with muscles, nerves and joints just like in any other body part. It is just in an atypical place and affecting more personal function. So, we typically treat patients with problems affecting ‘peeing, pooping and sexual function.’ Thankfully it is becoming more familiar through social media, mainstream newspapers and magazines, and people are talking about the importance of it.”

Q: So who needs pelvic floor physical therapy?

-Anyone who leaks just a little when they jump or run

-Anyone who has pain with vaginal penetration

-Men with pain in the penis, scrotum, rectum or with erection

-Those with a tight pelvic floor

-Pain with bowel movements or with constipation

-People with tailbone pain

-People with lower abdominal pain

-Postpartum women to check for pelvic floor muscle strength, relaxation, scar tissue issues, diastasis recti

-Pregnant people with back pain, rib pain, pelvic floor pain

We help women pre and post-partum, those with urinary issues and fecal issues, both men and women, post prostatectomy, urinary incontinence, and sexual function, women with organ prolapse, men or women with painful intercourse.”
